The County Envirothon is open to 9th through
12th graders and is held the first Wednesday in May each year. The
Envirothon program has evolved to become a national program that tests students'
environmental knowledge in five main subject areas: forestry, soils, aquatics,
wildlife, and current environmental issues. The current issue for 2000 was
wetlands.
In the County competition, students from each of the area high schools and middle schools, including home-school groups, form teams of five students each, who study resource materials provided by state and federal agencies. The teams compete against each other at the County Envirothon. The winning team then has the opportunity to compete in the State Envirothon which is attended by 60+ teams from across the state. The state champs then travel and compete at the National Envirothon. The 2000 Clinton County winners from Lock Haven Christian School were: Rachel Luben, Stephen Luben, Abby Rupert, Ben Steele and Bryce Stone, along with their advisor Terry Newcomer (their team name was "The Albino Black Bears"). This Clinton County team attended the State event, held on May 24th and 25th at the Shawnee State Park in Bedford County, and competed with 63 teams from across the state. A team from Delaware County went on to represent Pennsylvania at the national level. Next year, the State Envirothon will be held at Bald Eagle State Park in Centre County. The 2000 National Envirothon was held in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Pennsylvania team, from Delaware County, achieved top honors.
