Clinton County has nearly $100,000 available
for the purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easements for the Farmland
Preservation Program.
Through the voluntary selling of conservation easements, farmers are paid the difference between the agricultural value and the nonagricultural value of their land. This technique helps farmers who are feeling the pressures of development to be able to sell what can be called, "development rights" and still continue to farm. The owner of the easement, the county and/or state, has the right to say no to development. Public information meetings were been held in early 1995; one at the Greene Township Municipal Building in Loganton was a success, according to Chairman of the Agriculture Preservation Board Daniel Harger. There was genuine interest from the 20 people who attended. Guest speaker Fred Wertz from the Department of Agriculture gave a presentation and answered questions. Anyone interested in the Agricultural Land Preservation Program should call the Conservation District at (570) 726-3798, County Planning at 893-4080, or Penn State Cooperative Extension at 726-0022.
