The Clinton County
Baseline Water Quality Data Program
OVERVIEW

Over 10,000 households in Clinton County rely on groundwater from private wells for drinking, cleaning, and other everyday activities. Despite this, there are no well-construction standards in Pennsylvania and relatively little is known about the chemical quality of the groundwater that we use for domestic purposes. While surface waters across the county have been studied and monitored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), most publicly available groundwater quality samples were collected more than 30 years ago and do not include analyses of many chemicals of concern today.

In 2016, the County received a $247,912 grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to collect and analyze water samples from private wells across the county in an effort to better understand current water-quality conditions and assess the impact of agricultural, mining, and other land-use practices on our resources.

The study, which was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, sampled 54 privately owned domestic-supply wells from across the county for a wide variety of substances including minerals, gases, and bacteria. These sites were randomly selected and included voluntary participation by residents.

Results from the study can be found on the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) website at:

Partners for this project include the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Penn State Cooperative Extension, the Clinton County Conservation District, and the Clinton County Planning Department.
